Introduction

Pan American Unity in San Francisco City College consists of five panels ordered from left to right. The mural was painted as a gift for the college in 1940. Panel one’s theme is The Creative Genius of the South Growing from Religious Fervor and the Native Talent for Plastic Expression. Panel two’s theme is Elements from the Past and Present. The third panel, which is the center panel, is The Plastification of the Creative Power of the Northern Mechanism by Union with the Plastic Tradition of the South. The fourth mural’s theme is Trends of Creative Effort in the United States, The Rise of Woman in Various Fields of Creative Endeavor Through Her Use of the Power of Manmade Machinery. Finally, the last mural is The creative Culture of the North Developing from the Necessity of Making Life Possible in an New and Empty Land. In Pan American Unity Rivera portrays his personal life during that time and his marriage to Frida Kahlo. The mural also consists of Mexico’s indigenous background, Rivera’s political views, and the end of Porfiro Diaz’s regimen in Mexico. This varied mural was well received and is studied by artists to this day.
